Why does this group exist?
The Girl Effect exists to promote education and economic investment for adolescent girls living poverty. Their aim is helping these girls to get out of poverty and help their communities to get out of poverty as well. The idea is that adolescent girls are an under-utilized resource for impoverished communities. Their potential earning power could pull communities out of poverty if they are given the education and social ability (marrying and having children at young ages decreases a girls potential to earn money) to do so. Encouraging adolescent girls to in school also helps to prevent the spread of HIV as these girls are at high risk when they marry and have children at a young age.
What is it's mission?
The mission of the Girl Effect is to help provide resources to adolescent girls living in poverty. This can be through a loan to help the girl start a business, encouraging girls to stay in school, helping girls to be able to put off getting married and having children until they are in a less vulnerable position and better able to support a family, and ending the cycle of poverty.
Who does this organization help and why?
This organization is focused on young adolescent girls particularly ages 12-18 who are living in poverty (with a focus on developing countries). Many of these girls will continue the cycle of poverty (and be at increase risk of HIV) if they leave school early and get married and have children young.
How do they help?
The Girl Effect has a foundation that undertakes projects in impoverished communities to helps these girls and seeks to spread the word by providing information and encouraging others to spread the word as well. They have informational videos that are easy to understand and share. The website also provides news stories, videos, and case-studies that demonstrate the effects of investing in adolescent girls.
What elements of their organization do you think you might want to emulate in your own project and why?
I really like that their website has actual evidence of the claims that they are making. If I choose a movement where I have evidence of my claims, I would like to take inspiration and provide articles and other information resources on my site. This lends legitimacy to the movement. I also like the use of videos to spread the word, especially the typography based ones. It is a clean and efficient way of getting their points across that easily shared with others. I took an After Effects class last semester and while I'm not a master, this type of video may be something I want to consider for my movement. I think it could be an effective tool that makes use of a skill-set that I have.
