Net Neutrality is an important issue that affects all of us. Net Neutrality is the idea that internet service providers should not be able to discriminate against internet traffic (giving some sites or people much faster load times). Without Net Neutrality internet service providers can decide to slow down the transmission of information at will. This could have catastrophic implications, including for freedom of speech and free press. Imagine if Comcast could make it unbearably slow to load any negative news story about them. People would just close the (still-loading) tab without having gotten the information and Comcast would save some face. As you can see this is a very dangerous road to go down. The death of Net Neutrality could bring with it the death of some of the most important functions of the internet. The internet serves to bring us information when the mainstream media fails to do its job adequately. The internet coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests and (more recently) of the Ferguson protests are prime examples of this.
Sites like Save the Internet and Battle for the Net work to raise awareness about Net Neutrality and the danger that it is in. They encourage readers to not only educate themselves, but to take action. There are resources to help readers contact lawmakers and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to tell them that they care about Net Neutrality. Readers are also encouraged to spread the word. I really like the easy to find presentation of articles to help readers learn about Net Neutrality and I like the infographic on Battle for the Net.
I feel that Net Neutrality could be a good cause to pick because it is relevant. The fight to protect it is going on right now, in fact just yesterday sites across the web put up images of loading circles on their sites to promote awareness about the fight for Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality is also an issue that would benefit from as much press as possible and I think that a series of typography based PSAs, which make Net Neutrality easy to digest in an easy to share manner could help raise awareness. This would be a good use of my skill set, which includes video editing, photoshop, and after effects. I also feel very strongly about Net Neutrality as someone who grew up with the open internet and who is currently learning how to make websites.
